Science
Intent
Through science, we aim to inspire all pupils, encouraging them to be inquisitive about the world, nurturing their innate curiosity and enabling them to develop a range of skills that can be applied across their learning. This will be achieved through our ambitious and progressive science curriculum, allowing all pupils to reach their full potential.
From Reception to Year 6, all pupils will build a foundation of key knowledge and concepts, as well as develop skills in scientific enquiry and questioning. Throughout the curriculum they will engage with a range of disciplinary and substantive knowledge, resulting in a secure understanding of the science curriculum. We actively encourage all pupils to be inquisitive and develop their natural curiosity, whilst increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world. The aim is for scientific enquiry to form a common thread through the curriculum, helping pupils to understand that science is just as much about what they do as about what they know.
Implementation
We enrich our children’s lessons using outdoor learning, educational visits, science visitors, science days, scientific resources, books and the internet. Science specific displays are put up in each class that showcase children’s work and highlight vocabulary.
Quality First Teaching Approaches
- Pupils are given the opportunity to participate and access the learning at their own level.
- Lessons are planned carefully and adapted, taking into account individual children and different learning styles, to meet the needs of all pupils – visual aids, reading overlays, vocabulary lists (pre-taught where appropriate), key vocabulary displayed, partner talk, modelled examples of possible outcomes.
- Open-ended activities are planned across all year groups, especially in the early years, based on pupils’ interests.
- Ambitious and realistic challenges are given to all pupils and they are encouraged to articulate their ideas.
- ICT and teacher scribing is used as an alternative method for written recording and to promote independent learning.
