PSHE
Intent
We aim to create a safe and nurturing environment where every child can learn the knowledge and skills needed to make good choices, become responsible, and increasingly gain independence within our school community, while also reflecting our Christian Values in the wider community. Our school program is designed to provide a curriculum that is suitable for all children, promoting their physical and mental well-being, as well as their understanding of rights and responsibilities in a diverse society. We encourage children to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and equip them with the tools and knowledge to lead mentally and physically healthy lives.
Implementation
Class teachers allows one hour per week for PSHE. This time is be used to cover the SCARF scheme of work, and in addition to this class teachers assess and decide specific needs of their cohort and provide appropriate learning opportunities based on this should it fall outside the required teaching of the scheme of work.
Staff meetings offered CPD on refreshing teachers' understanding on the statutory elements of the PSHE curriculum and the use of pupil voice to feed back on their experiences.
Quality First Teaching Approaches
Due to the nature of PSHE some children will have questions around the topics they are taught. These should be handled with care and empathy. Using the OAIP guide’s section on Social and Emotional development and pastoral care provides some examples of good practice. Guidance can be found specifically on pages 16 and 34 in the OAIP book.
