History
Intent
Pupils value learning as historians through engaging and exciting lessons. Our ambitious and progressive history curriculum, allows all pupils to reach their full potential. It is it carefully sequenced enabling all pupils to to both understand and develop the range of skills needed to learn as a historian. They enjoy responding with creativity – rooted in high expectations for all. Children are provided with structured opportunities to revisit and build upon prior learning. Enabling all pupils to learn more and remember more. From Reception to Year 6, all pupils will build a foundation of key knowledge and concepts. We actively encourage all pupils to be inquisitive and develop their natural curiosity, whilst increasing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of our world, the past and consider how this has impacted upon their lives today.
Implementation
One History topic is taught per term (3 topics per academic year) we use a scheme of work from Plan Bee to plan and deliver lessons. Lessons are taught in a creative way and outcomes are adapted for each lessons. To develop staff, training sessions are based on findings from book looks and learning walks.
Quality First Teaching Approaches
Pupils are given the opportunity to participate and access the learning at their level. Lessons are planned carefully and adapted, to meet the needs of all children. Resources that are used could include visual aids, reading overlays, vocabulary lists (pre-taught where appropriate), key vocabulary displayed, partner talk and modelled examples of possible outcomes.
We strive to plan open-ended activities, especially in the early years, which is based on children's interests. In addition to this, computers, IPads and teacher scribing is used as an alternative method for written recording and to promote independent learning.
