English

Writing

English is a core subject; the skills taught, explored and practised at All Saints are the central thread running through, and ensuring access, to all other areas of the curriculum.

Intent

As with reading, writing is not only a core subject but an essential tool in accessing and unlocking the learning across the whole curriculum.  The aim at All Saints, is to provide all children with the skills and practice opportunities which allow them to become clear and effective communicators, able to understand their audience and the purpose of their writing.

Implementation

Writing units are expertly taught by our teaching team and structured around a challenging text and  writing purposes. This begins with a ‘First’ Author at Work at the very beginning of a unit, informing the teaching team which skills need teaching, which ones need further practice and allows children to set their own targets for the unit of work, alongside a unit cover page that contains the toolkit needed for the writing genre being explored.  Following new learning and opportunities to rehearse, the final phase of the unit allows the children to apply their new learning, plan for, and undertake a ‘Final’ Author at Work. This final piece shows progress and allows assessment to take place. Being able to refer back to toolkits, targets and practice gives a tangible sense of success and pride for the child, when they complete that final, independent piece.
