English Reading

Phonics

Intent

Here at All Saints, phonics is taught from Reception to Year 2. This looks like daily sessions incorporating song, movement and vocabulary/spelling work. We aim to furnish our children with, not only the skills that support reading and writing, but with the pleasure being able to read and write can bring, when beginning their journey in learning.

Implementation

The children at All Saints learn phonics through the scheme "Song of Sounds", applying, progressing and deepening their learning with the Big Cat books, our reading scheme, which matches phonics learning with the appropriate book.

Reading

Intent

Reading is a key priority at All Saints. We aim to show children how to access reading for pleasure – a valuable way to spend time but also as a means to acquire skills, knowledge and understanding of the world and being in the world. A means of accessing all the of the wonderful opportunities that being a reader can bring. After all, readers are leaders.

Implementation

Across the whole school children access reading through an exciting array of activities and opportunities. From explicit teaching from teachers and TAs, supporting, challenging and developing skills and comprehension, to whole class texts, weekly visits to the Learning Zone Library, reading with Reading Buddy Classes across year groups, Family Reading on a Friday morning and enjoying a regular refresh of classroom libraries in partnership with the Schools Library Service.  We know that a good reader, with a rich reading experience, will become a good writer.
