Design Technology
Intent
To provide high quality opportunities to explore the function and application of Design Technology, through the teaching of carefully sequenced skills, which are progressive and ambitious for all; And do so in a fun and engaging way. Design Technology encourages children to consider how things work and how they are constructed. Children have the opportunity to explore materials and design and create products to become practical, creative and enabled problem solvers.They are taught how to use tools in a safe and effective manner and how to evaluate their product. Design Technology fosters children’s creativity and imagination and develops their problem solving skills.
Implementation
We teach one unit per term. DT projects are recorded in the form of a work book in which children have the opportunity to design and plan projects. Children are given opportunities to develop and refine their skills and make quality products which they also learn to critically evaluate. This contributes to their overall skills development and learning of new technical knowledge and language. Children learn key DT knowledge, vocabulary and skills and these are built upon yearly.
Quality First Teaching
Knowledge Organisers are used at the start of each topic. These include key vocabulary. Teachers also share, model and explain vocabulary. Recapping of previous learning is done by revisiting learning from previous lessons as a starter for the next lesson. Teachers also model skills and tasks to all learners.
